20.12.22 International roundtable “China’s Global Leadership after 2022: opportunities and constraints”. Press release

The international roundtable online discussion “China’s global leadership after 2022: opportunities and constraints” took place on December 20th, 2022. It was organized by the Ukrainian Association of Sinologists, the A. Krymskyi Institute of Oriental Studies, NAS of Ukraine and Publishing House “Helvetica”. Isabel Hilton, the Founder, and Senior Advisor, China Dialogue Trust Visiting professor, Lau Institute, King’s College London, moderated the event.

Six China experts participated in the discussion: 

— Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College, London;

— Scott Kennedy, Senior Advisor and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business & Economics, CSIS | Center for Strategic & International Studies (USA);

— Dmytro Yefremov, Ph.D. in Economics, Assistant Professor at the Chair of International Relations of Kyiv Mohyla Academy, the Board member of the Ukrainian Association of Sinologists;

— Liu Yawei, Ph.D., Director of the China Program at The Carter Center;

— Xu Qinduo, Political analyst, researcher on Chinese Foreign Policy at Pangoal Institution, Beijing;

— Oleksii Koval, the board member of the Ukrainian Association of Sinologists, international journalist.

The panelists expressed their opinion on the following questions:

— What key messages did Xi Jinping send to the world on China’s global ambitions at the 20th Party Congress?

— What values and opportunities could China bring to the world as a global leader?

— How did the Russian invasion of Ukraine weigh on China’s economy and foreign relations after 10 months of the war?

— Can the USA push China to adopt a more proactive position toward the war in Ukraine?
